Gigantinho’s reform, planned and debated by Inter, is getting closer to getting off the ground. The club defined the model to manage the operations of the revitalized gym next to the Beira-Rio Stadium and finalizes the procedures to formalize the project, which will have an estimated cost of around R$20 million, an amount raised with commercial partners.

The model will not be the same as Beira-Rio, in which the construction company Andrade Gutiérrez was responsible for the renovation and controls a sector of the stadium. Nor with the club’s own resources, as former president Vitorio Piffero intended to renovate the Colorado house for the 2014 World Cup. Inter sought resources from partners, who will receive future compensation.

Of the amount needed, Colorado already has approximately 80%, which would represent R$16 million of the total value. Investors will inject values into the venture. It remains to define smaller quotas. The counterpart will come in advertising, commercial exploitation, among others, according to the club’s version.

– We are about to sign the contract. Maybe in May – says vice-president Victor Grunberg.

The viability of the current project came after the Deliberative Council denied progress on a previous proposal, from Opus/DC Set, which would be responsible for the renovation and subsequent operation of the gym for 20 years. There was an understanding that the chosen model would be more profitable for the club. The possibility of revitalizing the space has been discussed since 2018.

The management’s intention is to start the renovation in 2024. With Gigantinho revitalized, Inter will be the owner of all operations and processes, such as shows and events. The venue has hosted performances by Kiss, Iron Maiden, Mamonas Assassinas, Roberto Carlos, Bob Dylan. In 2015, it hosted an edition of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The renovation of the gym, however, does not guarantee the return of futsal or any other sport at the club. Colorado stacked cups between the late 1990s and early 2000s at the venue. Among the main achievements are the World Cup (1996), Libertadores (2000), Liga Futsal (1996) and Taça Brasil (1999).
