Striker Nico Williams, from Athletic Bilbaowas a victim of racism in the match of LALIGA this Saturday (27), against the Madrid’s athletic, at the Cívitas Metropolitano stadium. Shortly after, the striker scored a goal and went wild in celebration.
The case happened around the 41st minute of the first half. The player was approaching to take a corner, but stopped walking when he heard a scream coming from the stands.
The game was stopped and the referee went to speak to the match delegate. The stadium’s sound system issued a statement against racism, and part of the crowd booed.
Following the play, Nico Williams, when he picked up the ball, was also booed.
Minutes later, the striker scored the goal that, at the time, tied 1-1 for Athletic Bilbao. During the celebration, the player hit his arms towards the fans, as if to vent his feelings.
LALIGA speaks out
Even before the end of the match, through social media, LALIGA made a post condemning racism in football, but mentioning the specific case.
“In sport there is no place for racist or hateful acts. LALIGA firmly condemns any gesture of racism and will continue working until these intolerable behaviors are eradicated from our sport,” the organization wrote.
