Vasseur supports changing the points system, but sees limitations

-

Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur was open to the proposal to change Formula 1’s points system for the 2025 season, but highlighted a potential problem.

Based on his experience with Alfa Romeo-Sauber (currently Stake F1 Team), Vasseur understands the frustration of teams that run good races but do not earn points for finishing outside the top 10.

The F1 Commission met last Thursday to vote on expanding the positions that earn points, from 10 to 12. However, the decision was postponed until the next meeting, in July.

“I’m not against change,” Vasseur told the press after the Chinese GP. “Coming from Alfa Romeo, I completely understand the frustration of having a great weekend, but if no one leaves at the front, you finish 11th and score no points. It’s the same to finish 11th or 20th.”

Despite supporting the change, Vasseur emphasizes that the measure may not solve the problem completely. The pressure for change comes from the clear division of the grid into two performance groups in 2024. The first five teams, Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin, concentrate the majority of the points, leaving the others depending on retirements or errors by the leaders.

“If they make this change, and next year we have six teams at the front, the driver who finishes 13th will say the same thing. We need to pay attention”, pondered Vasseur, reiterating his initial support for the proposal.

It is not yet known why the decision was not taken at the last meeting. As the change should not affect the top teams, it is believed that they, as well as the teams fighting in the back pack, are in favor of adopting the new scoring system.
