One of the highlights of the current Men’s Super Leaguethe opposite Darlan, from Sesi Bauru, has 604 points in the tournament. Despite the high volume of points, it is practically impossible for him to surpass the record holder, former opponent Lorena. In the 2009/2010 season, as a Montes Claros Vôlei athlete, Lorena scored an incredible 699 points. The record holder sent a message to the current highlight.

“I think the records are there to break. I think if there were one or two more games, he would break. Darlan is doing very well, hitting the ball a lot. If there were a few more 3-2s, maybe he would overtake me,” he said in an interview with Itatiaia.

The record set by Lorena surpassed the mark of Darlan’s now coach, Anderson Rodrigues, also a former opponent. Anderson was the record holder with 678 points. Darlan still has one game to play: next Sunday (27), dispute the final of the Men’s Super League against Campinas/Vôlei Renata.

Lorena recalled her time at Montes Claros and commented on the points that helped her reach the record. In addition to the good personal phase, he credited two other factors.

“The setter, Rodriguinho, had a lot of confidence in me. He contacted me frequently, like they do with Darlan now at Sesi. Plus, we also played a lot of long games,” he said.

Montes Claros was the second team with the most sets played in the first phase of the tournament that season. There were 122 sets, only Caxias played more: 123.

According to CBV numbers, Lorena scored 582 times in the attack, 43 times in the block and 74 times in the serve. During the season, he was also voted the best server of the tournament.

Montes Claros reached the final of the 2009/2010 Superliga, but was defeated in the final against the then Cimed/Malwee, a team from Florianópolis. The team, led by Marcos Pacheco, included setter Bruninho, central defenders Éder and Lucão, as well as winger Thiago Alves. It was the fourth consecutive title for the South team.

Lorena also recalled how the Montes Claros team was assembled hastily and surrounded by distrust. The player himself was hired in the final stages of planning and had no plans to return to Brazil.

“Rodriguinho and Ezinho were signed and there was no opposite player. I was in Italy, having had a good year, I didn’t think about going back to Brazil. What motivated me to come back was the level of competition,” he revealed.

That season’s Super League featured big names. André Heller, André Nascimento, Sérgio Escadinha, Anderson, Giba, Gustavo and Murilo Endres, Rodrigão and Marcelinho were some of the names that were already confirmed in the national tournament. The high competitiveness captivated Lorena, who accepted the proposal from the team from Norte de Minas.

“We were the ugly ducklings. Nobody believed in us, at first, not even me. When I got off at the airport, they told me: we’re going to win everything! I doubted it, I said: these people are crazy,” she said.

Montes Claros won the Campeonato Mineiro and gained confidence for the season. The team had names like Rodriguinho, Tiago Brendle, Ezinho, Salsa and coach Talmo de Oliveira.

“Not even in my wildest dreams did I imagine this. Every game there were six, seven thousand people in the gym every game. It was a team that fit together, a magical year and everything went very well”, he assessed.

Lorena’s career

Fabrício Dias earned the nickname Lorena because he was born in the city of São Paulo. The athlete played until the age of 42 with prominence in Brazil and abroad, in addition to defending the Brazilian team.

The player played for Banespa, Canoas-RS, Santo André, Vôlei Futuro, Maringá, Taubaté, São José, Montes Claros, Botafogo, Lavras and Vila Nova-GO. In addition, he also played French, Italian, Puerto Rican and Qatari volleyball.
