The iconic Hockenheim circuit, which last hosted the Formula 1 German Grand Prix in 2019, is under new management. Private investors took over management of the track after approval from the local municipal council.

The city of Hockenheim and the Badischer Motorsport Club have transferred 74.99% of the shares to Emodrom Group Holding, but will retain 25.01% to have a say in future agreements.

The name Hockenheimring will be retained, as will the naming rights by the city of Hockenheim. The eight-year contract will cost the city around €90,000 annually, with the option of renewing for a similar amount or reducing the price if a main sponsor is found.

The expectation is that the new administration will carry out infrastructure expansion works, including a new hotel and an innovation center. The total investment could reach €250 million.

Tim Brauer, managing director of the Emodrom group, said: “The decision by Hockenheim city council marks a significant step in the strategic realignment of the circuit. We are pleased with the trust placed and proud to be part of this innovative development.”

The last time Hockenheim hosted the German GP was in 2019, in celebration of 125 years of Mercedes-Benz motorsport. Before that, the race alternated in even years with the Nurburgring circuit, which left the F1 calendar in 2013.

The last GP held in Germany was the Eifel, at the Nurburgring, in the 2020 season, affected by COVID-19.
