Alonso denies waiting for rivals and emphasizes that he is ‘master of his own destiny’ in F1

Fernando Alonso knows that he is one of the most valuable names in the current driver market in the Formula 1, but the Spaniard denied that he is waiting for decisions from his rivals to define what he will do next year. As much as he has controversial choices in his career, the two-time champion reaffirmed that he is “master of his own destiny”.

At 42 years old, Alonso has a history of surprising changes throughout the 21 seasons in which he was present among the elite of world motorsport. After the titles won with Renault in 2005 and 2006, the Asturian moved to McLaren and starred in one of the biggest rivalries in history with the then newcomer Lewis Hamilton.

His stay at Woking lasted just one year, with Alonso returning to Renault the following season and, two years later, moving to Ferrari. But the Spaniard did not achieve the title he dreamed of with the Italians in the five seasons he spent there. And to everyone’s shock, he left Maranello to return to McLaren.

This time, Alonso’s union with the traditional English team lasted for four championships, but far from the competitiveness seen in 2007, when he competed for the title until the last race. Fernando then left F1 at the end of 2018 to return in 2021 again with the Renault group, which took the brand Alpine for the category. It was another failed bet, until the veteran chose to change the team with which he was champion twice for the bold project led by Lawrence Stroll.

In 2023, the Aston Martin started the season as second force, and Alonso saw a real chance, albeit small, of finally winning again in the Monaco GP that year, but finished second, behind Max Verstappen. From then on, however, the Silverstone failed to keep up with the development of its rivals, and Alonso has already stated that having a car capable of climbing to the top step of the podium is one of the reasons for him to remain in F1 in 2025.

– I chose when to leave a team, when to join a team, I chose when to leave Formula 1 and when to return. And now I will choose what I will do next year.
