Flexibility proposed by the US government needs to be approved by the White House Office of Management and Budget

The US government will relax federal rules regarding marijuana use. The measure will be forwarded to the White House Office of Management and Budget for approval. The information is from the Associated Press agency.

Although the new rules do not allow the recreational consumption of marijuana, medicinal use will be permitted. In the country, the criteria for using legal or illegal drugs are classified into 5 levels.

Cannabis is currently classified as a Schedule 1 drug, defined by “possibility of placing a person at high risk of developing a substance use disorder.”

With the change, the substance will enter Class 3, being of “lower risk of developing a substance use disorder than medications in schedules 1 and 2, but with a greater risk than medications in schedules 4 and 5.”

In March, Biden said no one should be arrested for using or possessing marijuana. In 2022 and 2023, he granted pardons to all Americans convicted of possession or use of marijuana under federal law.

Even with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifying marijuana as more dangerous than cocaine and fentanyl, for example, most North American states have decriminalized its use.

The decision is the biggest federal advance in relation to the use of cannabis since 1961, the year in which the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs required the criminalization of the substance.
