Russian forces advanced at points along the front line in Ukraine and took control of a village in the Donetsk region and gained better positions near the city of Kharkiv this Monday (29), in addition to repelling Ukrainian attacks, said the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russia has rearmed faster than Ukraine and has a larger army than before the invasion. The Russian population is several times larger than Ukraine, which is trying to recruit more men into its army.

Russia controls around 18% of Ukraine, in the eastern and southern regions of the country.

On Sunday, General Oleksandr Syrsky, commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, admitted that the situation had worsened at the front and that Russian troops had achieved victories in several areas. He stated that the situation at the front has worsenedand now the Russia attacks along the entire front line.

Ukraine has struggled to recruit new troops and has been forced to retreat in several regions in recent weeks.

US will send $1 billion worth of weapons to Ukraine

The war began in February 2022. Ukraine and Western countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and other Europeans say they will not rest until Russian forces are defeated. For them, the war is a land grab to force Ukraine back into Moscow’s orbit.

Last year, Ukrainian forces launched a counteroffensive to try to regain some of the lost territory. This initiative did not workand since then the Russian Army has gained ground.

Russia says it will achieve all its objectives in what it calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine, parts of which Moscow now says it considers to be Russian territory.

The Russian advances have provoked criticism from Ukrainian military bloggers, who generally do not question the country’s armed forces.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s intelligence director, Kyrylo Budanov, said this month that the situation at the front will worsen until mid-May and June.

US money and systems to shoot down missiles

One of the hopes of the Ukrainian government is the possibility of receiving US nannies for the Ukrainians to fight against the Russians.

American President Joe Biden this week promised Volodymyr Zelensky (the Ukrainian president) that aid will arrive “quickly”.

The money was approved in the US Congress as a military aid package for American allies (in addition to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan were also included).

Ukraine is the biggest beneficiary, with around US$61 billion. This money will be used to buy weapons that will arrive in installments.

Until all the items arrive, the outlook will worsen, Ukrainian officials said. “We continue to wait for the shipment promised to Ukraine,” Zelensky said in a speech on Sunday.

The President of Ukraine spoke with Hakeem Jeffries, leader of the Democratic Party in the US House of Representatives. Zelensky said he insisted on the need to receive Patriot anti-missile systems. “We need them as soon as possible,” he said.

Mobilization for war

To strengthen the Army, Zelensky enacted a controversial military mobilization law at the beginning of the month, which aims to facilitate the enlistment of new recruits.

Kiev also suspended consular services abroad for men aged between 18 and 60. The government expects them to return to the country to fight Russian troops.
