The US is nationalizing a foreign company. The homeland of capitalism, when necessary, or when it deems it necessary, goes there, puts its interests forward and simply nationalizes a company, something that we could not do here, because the law prohibits it. TikTok will appeal, but I think it will lose. If there is no sale, the platform will simply close. It looks more like a caricature made of China than a caricature made of the USA. In one case, a regime is portrayed where there is no freedom at all and, in the other, an almost libertarian regime in which everything would be possible. Is not true. Reinaldo Azevedo, columnist at UOL

It’s not censorship, because it has nothing to do with content. It has to do with strategic choices and this is much more serious. The US is saying: ‘We here give ourselves the right, we talk about freedom, but this goes as far as we think our security is at risk. And finding that, we can simply nationalize a company’. ‘It can continue to do the dance, as long as the platform has an American owner, who we consider aligned with our purpose’. To say that it is censorship is to minimize the scope of it. It is authoritarian, we decide that a company will not act, simply claiming a risk to national security. Is there evidence that TikTok passes security elements to China? None, zero. Reinaldo Azevedo, columnist at UOL

O Look here! airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1pm.
