School shooting leaves one child dead in Finland

A 12-year-old boy took a firearm to school and shot his classmates this Tuesday morning, 2, at a school in the city of Vantaa, in northern Finland. According to local media, one child died and two others were seriously injured.

“Today, after 9am, a shooting occurred at a school, in which a sixth-grade student at the school died and two others were seriously injured,” said Ilkka Koskimaki, head of the East Uusimaa police department, at a press conference.

According to information from the Finnish national police, to which CBS News had access, after shooting at his schoolmates, the 12-year-old suspect fled the scene, but was detained by authorities minutes later.

Police have not released information about the motive for the attack and, at this time, the suspect is facing charges of murder and attempted murder before the country’s authorities.

In his account on X, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo lamented the situation and expressed solidarity with the families and the school community. “My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones and the remaining students and staff at Viertola school. We are monitoring the situation closely and awaiting updated information from authorities.”
