The sad and deep story behind the name Soulfly, according to Max Cavalera

-

Brazilian musician Max Cavalera became known worldwide in the late 1980s, as the guitarist, vocalist and composer of Sepultura, a group he founded alongside his brother Iggor. From 1986 to 1996, Max recorded sensational albums, which transformed Sepultura into the biggest name in the history of South American Metal.

Despite the success achieved with the wonderful “Beneath The Remains”, “Arise”, “Chaos AD” and “Roots”, Max left Sepultura in December 1996, when the band was on top of the world. The frontman left the group due to disagreements with the other members of the quartet.

The second half of 1996 was definitely not an easy period for Max Cavalera, after all, Dana Wells, his 21-year-old stepson, passed away in August of the year in question. After Dana passed away, Max’s relationship with the Sepultura musicians became unsustainable, which culminated in his departure.

After leaving Sepultura, Max Cavalera followed his path and founded a band called Soulfly, which is his main project to this day. However, the first thing Max did after kicking the bucket was to participate in a song recorded by the band Deftones, formed by friends of Dana Wells.

“It was a very strange time for me. It was my first album since I left Sepultura and the first album after the death of my stepson, Dana,” said Max, during an interview with Metal Hammer in 2019.

“The first thing I did after that [sair do Sepultura] went to work with [os caras do] Deftones, who were Dana’s friends. They were there at his funeral – Chino [Moreno, vocalista] was, in fact, one of the pallbearers”, added Max, who also explained the origin of the name Soulfly.

“They asked me to sing the song ‘Headup’ on ‘Around The Fur’, and that’s when I came up with the word ‘Soulfly’ [‘Soulfly / Fly high / Soulfly / Fly free’]. It all started from there”, said Max.

In the same interview, Max gave more details about Soulfly’s self-titled debut (released in 1998) and talked about a song on the album that he wrote in honor of his late stepson.

“I put together the first Soulfly album quickly; I had demos like ‘Eye For An Eye’ and No ‘Hope = No Fear’, but while we were in the studio, I felt like I needed to pay more respect to Dana. So I thought of ‘Bleed.’ , because that’s how we were all feeling. We were all still grieving, we were still bleeding, because of his death.

The song was built with a really cool groove, but it was the lyrics that made it really heavy. Lyrics like ‘See a mother cry, see a brother cry’… that was the kind of thing that happened in my house. I walked around and saw Gloria [Cavalera, esposa de Max] crying and saw the children crying. It was a really difficult time, man. I had to put that into the song.”

In the end, “Bleed” ended up becoming one of the highlights of Soulfly’s first album and a hit for the group, which, by the way, is still going strong. The most recent work by the group led by Max Cavalera is “Totem”, released in August 2022.
