The truth is that Max Cavalera lives for riffs. He goes to sleep every night thinking about them, wakes up in the morning to pick up where he left off and probably dreams about them in between. Since he moved from his hometown of Belo Horizonte in Brazil to Arizona in 1992, he has been finding riffs on the desert that surrounds him with resounding success.

“Sometimes I walk through the desert looking for them”Max tells Guitar World. “I leave the house to clear my head, come back and sit down with my guitar, and the riffs just pour out of me. I find my best ideas in the desert. They’re all there waiting for me… and there are a lot of them!”
If Max is driven by riffs, naturally one of his biggest idols is Tony Iommi, from Black Sabbath. “He wrote the Metal Bible and we’ve all read it thousands of times!”says the founder of Sepultura when referring to Iommi, who then chooses the best riff created by the legendary guitarist:
“Picking a favorite Sabbath riff is so hard. It might be the beginning of ‘Cornucopia,’ but ‘Symptom of the Universe’ probably wins. That first riff with the beat always makes me think, ‘Game over!’ We had the chance to play it when Sepultura did ‘Chaos AD’ and it was the most difficult cover we’ve ever done. I was nervous because Sabbath is something sacred, which should be protected, as if it were a religious artifact.”.

On another occasion, Max admitted that he wished he had recorded “Sabotage”: “Sabbath were at their peak when they made this album; they had already discovered what they wanted to be. Everything is played perfectly, Ozzy’s voice is great… it’s just a fantastic record”.
