The Panthers, a TV series from the 1970s, has already had two film versions and a TV remake, and will receive a new production. However, instead of once again having a trio of American women like the Panthers, the new series will star Brazilian teenagers

The website Deadline Hollywood revealed a reimagining of The Panthers is already in development by Sony Pictures Television – Kids and Floresta, a production company linked to the studio. The big detail, however, is that it will be written by actress and screenwriter Suzana Pires (‘Sol Nascente’) and will take place in Brazil, with a national cast.

According to Deadline, the series will revolve around a trio of pre-teens from different backgrounds who are selected by a talent scout because of their skills to be part of a spy academy. Each episode should show the trio solving crimes and saving the world, while trying to pass the year.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to evolve Sony’s incredible intellectual property for a younger, more modern audience,” commented Joe D’Ambrosia, General Manager, Sony Pictures Television – Kids. It is not yet known where the series will be shown or if it will have any connection with the other versions already filmed.

Thiago Teitelroit, creative director at Floresta, commented that it is rare for a franchise to go through so many generations without losing its appeal. “It’s a unique opportunity not only for the market, but especially because Brazilian viewers will be able to enjoy new ways of having fun with such charismatic characters.”

According to Sony Pictures and Floresta, the new version of “Charlie’s Angels” will be set in Brazil and will maintain the fundamental principles of the iconic brand, including action, mystery, comedy, and young, empowered female characters.

The series will focus on three pre-teens with different backgrounds and realities, who are selected according to their special abilities to join a secret spy school called Panther Academy. Each episode will follow the Panthers as they solve crimes and save the world… all while navigating their first year of spy school.

The stories will mix a variety of realistic, relatable and sometimes absurd cases, amplified with elements of fun and wish fulfillment.

In addition to the 70s series, The Panthers won two films in the 2000s, starring Lucy Liu (Kill Bill), Drew Barrymore (Tuned in Love) and Cameron Diaz (The Maskara). The concept received a new version in 2019, with Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding: Love Bleeds), Naomi Scott (Aladdin) and Ella Balinska (Resident Evil: The Series).

The Brazilian series of The Pantherswhich will probably use the original name of Charlie’s Angels in its new version, there is no release date yet.
