The covers of issue #1 of the new Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez ~ Marvel Universe 616 have been revealed

They were born mutants: the next stage of human evolution. Possessing powers and abilities of genetic origin, they use their unique gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them. From outcasts to outlaws, they are the Uncanny X-Men: Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, Nightcrawler and Wolverine. The flagship X-Men title mutates again with the 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men, which will end the Krakoan Era in June. And then, in August, Marvel Comics relaunches the X-comics with Uncanny X-Men #1, one of three main titles set in the new era X-Men: Rising from the Ashes.

Marvel has already announced that Gail Simone (Marvel’s Deadpool and Agent X, DC’s Batgirl and Birds of Prey) will write Uncanny, with art by David Marquez (Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, All-New X-Men). Now the publisher has released the cover (below) and new details about the main series, which sees Rogue leading the X-Men from their new base in Louisiana. (Meanwhile, Cyclops leads his own team of X-Men in Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman’s Alaska-set X-Men, while Kate Pryde and Emma Frost settle in Chicago in Eve L. Ewing and Carmen’s Exceptional X-Men Carnero).

The official synopsis: “With Professor X gone and his school turned into a nightmarish reflection of itself, the series sees Rogue become the pillar of Xavier’s dream alongside Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler and Jubilee. New Orleans, the Uncanny X-Men have returned to being the outlaw heroes the world hates and fears – and the light in the darkness for mutants everywhere has made a big statement with Krakoa, and now life is harder for them than ever! But Rogue’s X-Men will be there to welcome the mutants into their new family.

“A core group of essential X-Men rises from the Ashes to face a world without a home – and without Professor together again…but a fearless, evil power is out there hunting mutants, and he has a terrible secret that could destroy what’s left of the X-Men.”

“Most of my time lately has been spent trying to keep my brain from exploding out of my skull because of this comic,” Simone said in a statement. “It’s the fun of all my favorite mutants acting in surprising and wonderful ways, the incredibly brilliant work of the art team, or the exciting collaboration with all the other writers, but somehow every DAY is filled with some kind of manic joy. Since I picked up the comic, I’ve been jotting down notes, plots, and snippets of dialogue day and night. I feel like a kid in an amusement park. Who DOESN’T want to write Rogue and Jubilee and Gambit and all the rest?

“Uncanny X-Men is the comic that made me fall in love with comics,” said Marquez. “It was a dream come true working with Gail, Matt [Wilson] and the entire Marvel editorial team under Tom [Brevoort] to put this story together: a tough, heartfelt, action-packed, character-driven X-Men mystery. I hope readers have at least half as much fun reading it as we had making it.”

“I absolutely need to take a moment to praise David Márquez,” Simone added. “Not only will this be one of the prettiest comics on the stands, it’s simply an idea MACHINE and makes every page better than I wrote it. Anyway, join us, we’re having an X adventure and you’re all INVITED !”

The blockbusters of X-Men #1 arrive on July 10th, followed by Uncanny X-Men #1 on August 7th and Exceptional X-Men on September 4th. The variant covers shown in this article were signed by David Marquez, Adam Kubert, Leinil Yu and Luciano Vecchio.
