In an interview with The Dissolve, James Ward Byrkit explained how the idea for Coherence came about. “It was based on the reality of not having resources. It also came from the desire to return to the purity of cinema, after years of working on these great films that I liked, but which were very pre-planned, where many decisions were made before I even got on set. I missed the days when it was just me, a few actors and a story… My friend and collaborator Alex Manugianwho plays Amir in the film, he and I started talking about how the episodes of Beyond imagination They made the most of simple locations and gave a very cosmic feel to the most mundane circumstances.”

He also talked about the inspirations for the film. “The Twilight Zone, for sure. Primer it wasn’t really an influence, but rather a sign to us that maybe there was an audience for this kind of film. The film itself is so different from ours that it didn’t have as much influence as, say, God of Carnage in Roman Polanski or other non-science fiction films.”
