Love Actually’s grieving widower, who also mentored Batman in Batman Begins and Young Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, he became a grumpy man with special abilities: Taken made Liam Neeson one of the biggest stars in the action genre.
Taken: A kidnapping and revenge plot
In the film, the bodyguard and former agent Bryan Mills (Neeson) has a troubled relationship with his ex-wife Lenore (Famke Janssen) and her daughter Kim (Maggie Grace). When Kim is kidnapped during a trip to Europe, Bryan manages to prove how much he loves Kim-and how merciless he can be: in hunting down criminals, his anger and his sadistic side come together in a brutal way.
In Taken 2, the father of a victim of Bryan’s actions in the first film seeks revenge and kidnaps him and Lenore while they vacation in Istanbul. A bold plan that ultimately only leads to more bloodshed. And in Taken 3, Bryan must run from the law when a cruel man accuses him of cold-blooded murder and the police set out on his trail.
The trilogy was produced and co-written by Luc Besson, creator of The Fifth Element and The Professional, and directed by Pierre Morel (part 1) and Olivier Megaton (parts 2 and 3). In fact, it was a coincidence that they put Neeson in front of the cameras:
Jeff Bridges was originally cast to play Bryan Mills. However, the actor had to refuse, and the role was offered to Neeson. He accepted because he was interested in the physical challenge, convinced that it would be just another film in his career – little did he know that it would, in fact, be his biggest success to date.
