Number of people living in extreme poverty drops by 33% in Alagoas

In 2023, the number of people living in extreme poverty fell by 33% in Alagoas, compared to the previous year. This means that more than 100 thousand people from Alagoas stopped living below the extreme poverty line last year. The information comes from ugly research by the Institute of Social and Economic Justice (IJSN), based on data from IBGE.

According to the data released, the extreme poverty rate in 2022 was 13.2%, and rose to 8.8% in 2023 in Alagoas – a drop of 4.3 percentage points. Additionally, the state was the fourth state with the largest overall reduction in poverty, marking an 8% drop in the rate.

This progress is not isolated, as Brazil as a whole also saw a significant drop in the extreme poverty rate, from 5.9% to 4.4%. In total, around 3.1 million Brazilians overcame extreme poverty last year.

“There is still a lot to be done. We have a rate of 8.8% that needs to be reduced more and more. Allied with the Federal Government’s public policies, we will reduce it even further and these results show that we are on the right path”, stated Governor Paulo Dantas.
