About 2,587 patients are waiting for an organ or tissue in Pernambuco

According to data from the Transplant Center of Pernambuco, the main reason for organ donation not happening is the non-authorization of families, which represents 41% of the reasons for not performing transplants.

Lucas Stterphann, a nurse from the Pernambuco Team for Abdominal Organs for Transplantation, comments on the main reasons that lead many families to opt for this decision: “Among them, the whole body, the family’s desire to have the whole body. The refusal by the patient to be against the donation of organs in life and he had told this to the family. And the third, but no less important, is not knowing the patient’s will in life”.

As it happens?

The diagnosis and confirmation of brain death are guided by strict criteria established by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM). When a patient is identified with brain death in a hospital, a condition that allows the donation of the heart, kidneys, pancreas, liver and corneas, the Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) and the Intra-Hospital Organ and Tissue Donation Committees for Transplants (CIHDOTTs) take action to talk to family members and provide information about the donation process.

– The family interview for organ donation must be carried out by a trained professional. Because the family, naturally, will bring up all the doubts they have about the process at that moment. So, the presence of a professional who brings clear, accurate and objective information about organ donation is decisive for the outcome of this interview – adds Lucas.

saving lives

Through the donation, a person can benefit up to eight lives. “Here in Pernambuco, we capture the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas and cornea. In other states they do lung and other tissues, too. So, many lives can be saved when a person agrees to donate their family’s organs”, explains Janaína Carvalho, a nurse at the Petrolina Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). Currently, 2,587 patients are waiting for an organ or tissue in Pernambuco. The longest queue is by kidney, with 1,453 people in the queue.
