The fauna inspection team from the state Department of the Environment seized 119 kilos of irregular fish in a police blockade on the MT-040, yesterday, at the exit from Santo Antônio de Leverger, towards Barão de Melgaço.
The fish were in the trunk of a vehicle approached by a team of Sema employees and military police officers from Chapada dos Guimarães. During the inspection, 137 pacupevas, one dorado, 11 pacus, 25 piraputangas and three sardines were found in a cooler.
The team was warned by Santo Antônio de Leverger police officers of the infraction while they were on their way to an inspection operation. Two occupants of the vehicle were taken to the police station to prepare a police report and were fined R$16,900. Eight reels were also seized. The fish was donated by Sema to the Shelter for the Elderly of the Community of Peixinho, in Santo Antônio de Leverger.
The seizure occurred due to the transport of fish and prohibited species, such as dorado and piraputanga. Some of the species were outside the minimum measurement established by law and the offenders did not carry an Amateur Fishing Card, which is a mandatory document.
Throughout the State, the capture, transport, storage and sale of 12 species of fish are prohibited, namely: cachara, caparari, dorado, jaú, matrinxã, pintado/surubim, piraíba, piraputanga, pirarara, pirarucu, trairão and tucunaré.
Amateur fishermen are allowed to catch and release and catch two kg or one unit of any weight, respecting the minimum measures established by law, as long as it is for local consumption and is not on the list of prohibited species. The transport and sale of fish by amateur fishermen is prohibited.
According to the legislation, a place where fish is consumed is a hotel, ranch, hotel and inn, ravine, camp or similar, as long as it is located no more than 500 meters away from the river bank.
