The Canoas Air Base, in Rio Grande do Sul, will receive part of the commercial flights that were scheduled to land or take off from Salgado Filho International Airport, in Porto Alegre, flooded by the heavy rains that hit the state in recent days.ebc.gif?id=1594120&o=node

According to the Air Force, the objective of the measure is to “supply the demand arising from the closure of” the airport in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul and was planned with the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) and airlines.

The first aircraft, from Azul Linhas Aéreas, landed in Canoas at 3:10 pm this Wednesday (8), transporting 1.5 tons of supplies that the company collected at more than 500 collection points, including water, blankets, absorbent pads, diapers and saline solution. In a statement, the company claims to have another 251 tons of donations ready to be sent to the state in the coming days.

Tomorrow (9), other flights from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and four aviation companies are expected to use the Canoas Air Base to unload supplies. In the third phase of the operation, an aircraft will land in the city carrying the first group of passengers.

According to Fraport Brasil, Salgado Filho’s concessionaire, there is no forecast of when operations at Porto Alegre airport will resume.

“To comply with airport legislation, a Notam (announcement on changes and temporary restrictions that impact air operations) was issued with an end date of May 30th”, informs Fraport, in a note.

The document can be changed at any time, added the concessionaire, which asks those who have flights scheduled to contact the airlines in order to obtain information on how to proceed.

Donations

In a statement, the FAB also announced that it will launch donations and essential materials, by air, to the population of places isolated by the rains, which have already killed 100 people across the state.

“The missions seek to bring more agility in serving the affected population, since the roads are almost entirely blocked”, informed the Air Force.
