With its paradisiacal beaches, rich culture and adventures for all tastes, it is no surprise that Ceará is one of the most sought after states by Brazilian tourists in the summer, as well as throughout the year. Thus, on National Tourism Day, the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense (SSPDS) highlights the tourist assistance services provided by the State Security Forces.

BPTur

In the overt and preventive policing of the tourist regions of the Capital, Metropolitan Region and Interior of Ceará, the Tourist Policing Battalion (BPTur), of the Ceará Military Police (PMCE), serves both visitors and Ceará residents who frequent these areas. Police officers act through policing on foot (container and cabin), motorcycle, cycle patrol and vehicle.

In Fortaleza, there are BPTur police officers from Praia de Iracema to Praia do Futuro. There is also support policing at João Thomé Bus Station, Fortaleza Airport, Praça do Ceart and Emcetur. In the Metropolitan Region, there are support stations in Porto das Dunas, in Aquiraz, and in Cumbuco, in Caucaia. In the State, BPTur is present from Camocim to the city of Icapuí.

Since September 2023, BPTur police officers have had a new uniform. “The new material is lighter and colder, consequently, it does not heat up and, because it is mesh, it facilitates mobility and protects from the sun”, explains BPTur 1st lieutenant, Michelly Freitas.

Deprotur

Working together with BPTur, the Tourist Protection Department (Deprotur), of the Civil Police of the State of Ceará (PCCE), has the mission of providing support and assistance to tourists, throughout the state of Ceará, who have been victims of some crime. “In the case of tourists who may be victims of any type of crime in our state, they should contact Deprotur, or any Civil Police unit, to register the appropriate Police Report (BO) so that measures can be taken. necessary steps to uncover the crime”, advises Deprotur delegate, Andrade Júnior.

According to him, in cases where property stolen from tourist victims is recovered, the object is sent, through the Post Office, to its respective owner at any address in the country at no cost.

The delegate also advises that all tourists who wish to hire any type of service access the Cadastur System, on the Ministry of Tourism website, and check whether the provider is duly registered. Another tip is, whenever you use transport services via apps, write down the license plate of the vehicle used for the service provided, to facilitate the retrieval of any belongings.

PCCE also has the Airport Police Station, also available to tourists. If they wish, visitors can also register a Police Report (BO) through the PCCE website. The incident will be forwarded to Deprotur and the investigations will be duly forwarded.

Lifeguard

For those visiting the coast of Ceará, lifeguards from the Ceará State Military Fire Brigade (CBMCE) are available on the state’s main beaches, as well as rivers and lagoons. Daily, lifeguards are in the municipalities of Fortaleza, Caucaia, Aracati and Jijoca de Jericoacoara in towers, vehicles and boats.

In addition to guiding bathers and preventing drownings, lifeguards are responsible for rescuing drowning people; support and prevention with the use of vessels; support for lost children and people; clinical pre-hospital care and trauma; search and rescue of marine animals; search and recovery of drowning victims and other institutional support.

“This is done in person, which we call preventive. We are on site, giving tips so that people do not expose themselves to risk. And in all other cities, we act reactively, that is, when there is an incident, our teams are directed to the location of the incident”, explains the commander of the 1st Maritime Rescue Company (1st CSMAR/BBS), captain Rodrigo Monteiro Carneiro.

To enjoy Ceará’s beaches safely, Captain Rodrigo makes some recommendations. “The most important tip is to always try to have fun close to an active lifeguard station, talk to a water rescue professional and ask him what the best place for fun is. Always be very careful with children, stay one meter away, which is the distance that the person responsible has to give first aid if that child needs it”, he advises.

The commander also reminds you not to mix the use of alcoholic beverages and to always respect the signs imposed by lifeguard professionals, in addition to never underestimating the strength of nature or overestimating your physical strength. “Nature will always have more strength and more energy than us”, he concludes.

Ciops

The service provided by the SSPDS Integrated Security Operations Coordination (Ciops) is also designed for foreign tourists. During each work shift, a bilingual call center is available. Thus, if there is a call from a foreigner, it is transferred to the appropriate assistance. In addition, the local telephone operator also directs calls with international urgent and emergency numbers 911, from the United States, and 112, from Europe, to the 190 exchange. In 2024, there have already been six calls from foreign people.
