In recent months, Bahia has faced a frightening increase in the number of serious accidents involving buses on federal highways. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) recorded a 133% increase in serious accidents involving these vehicles, compared to 2023.

To date, 56 accidents involving buses have been recorded on Bahia’s federal roads. Within this number, 14 were considered serious, leaving 152 injured and 34 fatalities. Compared to the previous year, in 2023, 54 accidents were recorded, 6 of which were serious, totaling 118 injuries and only 1 fatality.

The data is the result of tragic accidents that occurred recently. In January, in the city of Gavião, BR 324, with 20 fatalities, followed by another, in April, in the city of Teixeira de Freitas, BR 101, with 8 deaths.

These painful events highlight the urgency of effective measures to mitigate risks on the roads, especially when it comes to public transport.

Yellow May

In response to this scenario, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) has intensified its awareness actions during Yellow May, including the focus on bus inspections. The objective is to alert both drivers and passengers about the crucial need to respect traffic laws and, above all, to use seat belts, a mandatory device that has been proven to be effective in reducing damage in the event of accidents.

Next Friday (10), the PRF will be present at the Salvador Bus Terminal promoting a series of educational and preventive actions, with lectures and distribution of teaching materials.
