The Patos de Minas Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) released a report that reveals the intense activity during the month of April 2024, demonstrating the vital importance of this service for the local community. With a total of 2,223 calls recorded throughout the month, SAMU remained active and ready to respond to emergencies that arose during this period.

Of the 2,223 calls received, 1,132 demanded the immediate dispatch of ambulances, highlighting the urgent need for medical assistance in more than half of the incidents. Additionally, 430 calls were answered with medical advice, reflecting SAMU’s ability to offer support and guidance in less serious situations.

Meanwhile, in the city of Presidente Olegário, only eight calls to SAMU were recorded over the same period, none of which required the sending of an ambulance. Seven of these calls were resolved with medical advice, demonstrating a less demanding scenario compared to Patos de Minas.

In Lagoa Formosa, there were a total of ten calls to SAMU, but, similar to Presidente Olegário, none of them resulted in an ambulance being sent. Of the ten calls, five were resolved with medical advice, indicating a significant proportion of cases that could be managed remotely.

However, a worrying aspect highlighted by the report was the record of 63 prank calls in the Northwest region of Minas Gerais. Such false calls represent a waste of precious resources and time for emergency services, as well as constituting a serious crime. Under the terms of the Penal Code, the perpetrator of a prank call to emergency services can be punished with imprisonment from one to six months, or a fine, as provided in article 340, which deals with false reporting of a crime or misdemeanor.
