National Institute of Meteorology announced the 5ºC increase in average temperature and warns of health risks

Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) released this Monday (May 6, 2024) a heat wave warning, with forecast temperatures 5º C above average for the Southeast and some regions of the South. The warning is valid for at least 5 days and, according to the agency, there is a risk to health.

The heat wave will mainly affect the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná, including metropolitan regions of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, south and southwest of Minas Gerais, Campinas (SP), Bauru ( SP), Piracicaba (SP) and central eastern Paraná.

Other affected areas listed by Inmet are Itapetininga (SP), Zona da Mata (MG), Ribeirão Preto (SP), macro metropolitan region of São Paulo, Araraquara (SP), south, northwest, lowlands and center of the state of Rio, Vale do Paraíba São Paulo, southern Espírito Santo and central eastern Paraná.

According to Inmet, Brazil was hit by 9 heat waves in 2023. The city of Araçuaí (MG) recorded a temperature of 44.8ºC, the highest ever recorded in Brazil. Last year also recorded the country’s highest historical average with 24.92ºC.
