Seven inmates escaped from one of the cells at the Barreiras Penal Complex, in the west of the state, in the early hours of this Monday (6). They had already been convicted and were in an area designated for those already serving their sentence.

According to information from the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization of the State of Bahia (Seap), the circumstances of the escape are being investigated, in addition to ongoing administrative procedures, such as counting prisoners.

According to information obtained by TV Oeste, an affiliate of Rede Bahia in the region, with the local Civil Police, they had sawed through the cell’s grille and protective screen and then left through the back of the penal complex.

Six inmates who escaped were identified as:

  • Maxwell de Jesus Santos, who was in prison, for the crime of bodily harm;
  • Victor da Silva Pinto, who was closed due to reception;
  • James Iure Novais Santos, imprisoned in a closed regime, for the crime of homicide;
  • Rafael Fagundes de Souza, imprisoned in a semi-open regime, for the crime of robbery;
  • Venâncio Aires da Guarda Neto, imprisoned in a semi-open regime, for the crime of receiving and trafficking drugs;
  • Sandro Henrique Nogueira dos Santos, imprisoned in a semi-open regime, for robbery.
  • Witalo de Souza Silva, arrested for qualified robbery

Security forces have already been informed and an operation has been mounted to recapture the fugitives.
