Students from the State Department of Education (Seduc) participated in the tests of the 2nd edition of the Piauí State Schools Mathematics Tournament – TME², this Monday (6). In this first phase of the Tournament, the test was administered to 138,608 students, in 642 Seduc schools and took place in reference to the date on which National Mathematics Day is celebrated, May 6th.

The Secretary of State for Education of Piauí (Seduc-PI), Washington Bandeira, explains that the second edition of TME² aims to strengthen the performance of the network’s students in the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools).

“Since last year, when we created the Piauí State Schools Mathematics Tournament – TME², an action within the Seduc Olímpica program, our goal was to expand the range of opportunities for students to test and expand their knowledge. We believe in carrying out tests that test knowledge that goes well beyond the classroom, so it is a fact that students who participate in these competitions open up space to add a much wider range of content and experiences, which go beyond studying for the entrance exam” , highlights the Secretary.

The First Phase test lasted two hours and took place in 224 municipalities. In the TME², objective tests are applied in the First Phase, and subjective tests are applied in the Second Phase, for Seduc students in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of high school throughout the territory of Piauí, which will be applied on July 6th.

At the Full-Time State Center (Ceti) Father Joaquim Nonato, the 1st grade high school student, Maria Eduarda Teixeira, left the test with confidence. “I have been very interested in mathematics since I was little and I believe I did a good test. At school they always support us in the Olympics and having the possibility of a scholarship as a result of the tournament is an added incentive to buy books,” she said.

Another CETI student, Father Joaquim Nonato, who took the TME² test is young Bruno Micael, who highlights the test as a step towards the next knowledge Olympics.

“Participating in this test is essential as a preparation step for OBMEP, Kangaroo Mathematics Olympiad and other tournaments. One of the advantages of TME², in addition to the medals, is being able to receive a scholarship that helps with studies, such as purchasing materials or even helping at home”, he explains.

Seduc students with the best grades will be awarded and invited to an immersion in Mathematics, which will take place from August 19th to 23rd, in Teresina, in preparation for OBMEP, during the Special Mathematics Day. Those awarded gold, silver and bronze medals will receive a Junior Scientific Initiation Scholarship, over six months, sponsored by FAPEPI.

“Students with better performance in the second phase of TME² will have the opportunity to travel to Teresina, meet different students who have similar purposes and values, develop friendships and increase their own culture. In addition, there is all the socio-emotional development and the possibility of winning an incentive scholarship worth R$300.00”, explains secretary Washington Bandeira.
