The indigenous population in Bahia is the second largest in Brazil, second only to the state of Amazonas. In Bahia, 229,443 people declare themselves indigenous – less than half of the northern state, where there are 490,935. Even so, the indigenous population in Bahia represents 13.5% of the total in the country.

Throughout the national territory, indigenous people number 1,694,836 people. This means that 1 in every 10 indigenous Brazilians are in Bahia, whether in demarcated territories or not. In the state, indigenous women are the majority (53%), but this changes within lands formally recognized by the State, where their participation drops to 49.3%.

The numbers lead us to believe that women migrate more outside of indigenous territories, in a movement similar to what happens in quilombola communities.

“Compared to 2010, women gained participation among indigenous people in all situations. But the predominance of men in indigenous lands still occurs, even with the decrease in the male population within the territories”, analyzes Mariana Viveiros, supervisor of information dissemination at the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in Bahia.

Data revealed by IBGE also indicate that the indigenous population of Bahia is predominantly young within the demarcated territories, where four out of every 10 people are of school age. The dynamics are different outside indigenous lands, where there are more elderly people than people up to 14 years of age among indigenous people. There are 106 elderly people for every 100 children.

The population trend in Bahia follows the rest of Brazil. Nationally, nearly 70% of residents on indigenous lands are under the age of 30. The data was released on Friday (3), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and is part of the Quilombolas and Indigenous peoples module, by Sex and Age, of the 2022 Census.
