According to the Secretariat of Penal and Socio-Educational Systems and the Criminal Police, 1,057 inmates from the Jacuí State Penitentiary were taken last Friday (3) to the Charqueadas High Security Penitentiary. The other prisoners from the Jacuí unit remained there, installed on the upper floors.

The superintendent of the Penitentiary Services of Rio Grande do Sul, Mateus Schwartz, explained that of the seven prison units located in Charqueadas, three were flooded due to the rise in the level of the Jacuí River. In total, there are 6,000 prisoners in the complex.

Schwartz also reported that no inmates from the closed regime in the state were released due to the floods and no complications were recorded in the penitentiaries.

Electronic anklet

The Court also authorized prisoners at the Charqueadas Penal Institute to be under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet for a period of 20 days. The unit was also flooded.

Within five days, prisoners must present themselves for the installation of the equipment. If they do not appear, they will be considered fugitives, according to Schwartz.

The inmates will return to the penitentiary on May 23.
