The 2022 Demographic Census, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), revealed that the State of Pernambuco is home to a significant indigenous and quilombola population, with 106,646 people self-declared as indigenous and 78,864 as quilombolas. Among indigenous people, 34,313 lived on indigenous lands, while 72,332 lived outside them.

In the state, the municipality with the largest self-declared indigenous population is Pesqueira (10,506), followed by Tacaratu (8,241), Cabrobó (6,231), Águas Belas (5,712) and Jatobá (5,579).

Among the quilombolas, 6,769 were in quilombola territories and 72,095 lived in other areas. In Pernambuco, of the 184 municipalities in the State, 113 had at least one person who declared themselves a quilombola. The municipality with the largest quilombola population is Custódia (7,744), followed by Bom Conselho (6,477), Garanhuns (5,938), Santa Maria da Boa Vista (3,622) and Mirandiba (3,363).

The most significant age groups were 15 to 19 years old for both indigenous people and quilombolas. Women predominate in both communities, representing 51.22% of indigenous people and 50.55% of quilombolas.
