The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) reported that the first week of May should continue with the trend of above-average rain in much of the North and South regions of the country. According to the institute, the rains will also affect, until the 6th, the east of the Southeast Region and the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba, as well as in specific areas in the center-south of the Northeast region.

Inmet also maintained the indication of large volumes of rain in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina due to the action of a frontal system in the south of the country. Heavy rains in Rio Grande do Sul have already caused 13 deaths and 21 people are still missing. The institute’s forecast for this Thursday (2) is to warn of potential danger over part of the state until 1 pm, with an indication of rain between 20 and 30 mm/h or up to 50 mm/day and intense winds, between 40- 60 km/h.

“The week begins with a storm due to the area of low atmospheric pressure that should favor the formation of instability in areas of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. However, between Wednesday and Thursday, a frontal system over the ocean intensifies the rain in these areas, with significant and more widespread volumes, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusts of wind”, informed Inmet.

Also according to Inmet, the week could see large amounts of rain, which could exceed 70 millimeters (mm) especially in the north of the country, due to the combination of heat and high humidity, in addition to the Intertropical Convergence Zone that continue to influence instability in the region , causing intense rain.

North East

For the Northeast, the approach to the convergence zone could cause rain in the northern part of the region. On the east coast, accumulations are expected to exceed 40 mm, mainly in areas of Sealba (an area that covers the states of Sergipe, Alagoas and Bahia). The same thing happens on the coast of Bahia, where instabilities still persist due to the transport of moisture from the ocean to the continent. In the interior of the region, the forecast is for hot weather and no rain.

For the North region, rain showers are forecast throughout the week, with amounts greater than 70.0 mm in areas of northern Amazonas, Pará and Roraima, as well as in Amapá, which may be accompanied by lightning, gusts of wind and thunderstorms. In other areas, isolated rain showers with minor accumulations cannot be ruled out.

For the Central-West and Southeast regions, Inmet points out that they will have hot and dry weather, except in areas of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, where there should be quick and temporary rain.

In the period between May 7th and 15th, Inmet predicts rain in the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, with rain showers that could exceed 80 mm in the north of Rio Grande do Sul and south of Santa Catarina. In the rest of the region, the forecast is for lower accumulations.

For the North Region, the forecast is for accumulated rainfall greater than 70 mm in much of the region, except in areas of Acre, Tocantins, Rondônia and central-southern Pará, with volumes of less than 20 mm.

In the Northeast, the expectation is for rain in the form of showers that could exceed 60 mm in the north of the states of Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará and the eastern part of the region. In other areas, lower rainfall accumulations are expected.

Finally, in the Central-West and Southeast, the forecast is for dry and hot weather in most regions, except in Espírito Santo, which is expected to experience quick and temporary rain.
