Euclides da Cunha Municipal Library reopens on Ilha do Governador
-
A Rio City Hall reopened the Euclides da Cunha Municipal Library, on Governador Island, on Tuesday (04/30). The reopening of the space is one of the first actions of the program Libraries of Tomorrow, whose objective is to implement works to restore, modernize and requalify municipal libraries and reading rooms. Last year, the municipality, with the support of Fecomércio RJ, signed a letter of intent to carry out the program together in at least three of these spaces. There are 14 in total.
Libraries of Tomorrow’s investment exceeds R$30 million, and the resources are for the acquisition of accessible collections, new furniture, structural renovations and the implementation of an educational and cultural program for each space. The next library to be opened will be Machado de Assis (Botafogo).
The Libraries of Tomorrow program is part of the National Book and Reading Plan strategy. Planning has five axes of action, which are: democratization of access; promotion of reading and reader training; appreciation of reading, art and education; development of knowledge experiences and libraries as a place for meetings and exchanges; and cultural production and circulation.
Another important action planned for the semester will be the publication of the Rio Capital Mundial do Livro Public Notice to include literary proposals. Just over R$2.8 million will be transferred to initiatives such as book clubs, soirees, publications, reading circles, virtual books, book fairs, among other possibilities, valuing and developing the habit of reading in different communities and territories.
Rio was chosen as the first Portuguese-speaking city to receive the title of World Book Capital, a recognition granted by UNESCO due to the excellence of its book promotion and reading programs. The city will assume this role from April 23, 2025, when World Book Day is celebrated. In 2024, Rio City Hall begins preparations and the first actions as a capital city. The delivery of the Euclides da Cunha/Sesc Cocotá Municipal Library is the first of these.
