The State Department of Health registered, for the first three months of this year, 10,980 victims of traffic accidents treated in hospitals in the State Health Network. The number is 10.8% higher than that collected for the same period in 2023. Only at Hospital da Restauração (HR), a unit considered a reference in trauma-orthopedics and in the care of patients victims of traffic accidents in Recife, until April 29th, 2,129 victims were treated. Among the most recurrent injuries recorded in Pernambuco this year are fractures, sprains and polytrauma.
To raise awareness among the population about the risks of reckless behavior in traffic, throughout the month of May, SES-PE carries out a series of educational actions in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR) and in cities in the interior of the state, in reference to the campaign Yellow May. And Operation Lei Seca de Pernambuco (OLS/PE) will carry out inspections at strategic points with large vehicle circulation.
The Federal Highway Police (PRF) also began activities related to the topic. From this Tuesday (30th), traffic educational activities will be intensified, with special attention to motorcyclists, due to the increase in accidents recorded among this public. According to data collected by the corporation, 2999 traffic accidents were recorded on Pernambuco’s federal highways in 2023, which left 3848 injuries and 277 deaths. The main cause of death last year was driving the wrong way, which took the lives of 53 people, and is generally associated with undue overtaking.
