It was announced by the governor of Tocantins, Wanderlei Barbosa, during the launch of the May Yellow 2024 campaign, the allocation of R$ 10 million for signage and improvements at crossings on state highways that cross municipalities in Tocantins. The declaration took place on the morning of this Tuesday, 30th, in the auditorium of the Palácio Araguaia Governador José Wilson Siqueira Campos.

The campaign, held in Palmas, has as its slogan the phrase “Peace in Traffic Begins with You” and marks the beginning of a series of activities organized by the State Department of Traffic of Tocantins (Detran/TO), with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the high rates of traffic accidents in the State.

“We have resources to make improvements to our roads and the safe crossing of people from Tocantins in urban perimeters is one of these priorities. We will invest R$10 million to promote signage on urban state highways, those that cross the cities of Tocantins. We will also improve educational campaigns. The objective is to reduce the number of traffic accidents and the number of injured people, which overload our hospitals. This Yellow May campaign meets all of this”, said Wanderlei Barbosa during the ceremony.

Opening

The opening ceremony featured the presentation of the complete program of activities that will take place throughout the month of May. Furthermore, the efforts of the Government of Tocantins and partner entities were highlighted to promote a change in the attitude and behavior of drivers and other road users, with the aim of providing safer and gentler traffic for everyone.

“Detran promotes, together with several State departments, this awareness message so that society can reflect on conduct and behavior in traffic. Last year, we had 581 deaths and these are unacceptable numbers. As a result of the Government of Tocantins taking this care to guarantee safety for people, we are currently taking this action”, expressed the president of Detran, William Gonzaga.

The inaugural event will be followed by the opening of the campaign in the cities of Araguaína, on May 6th; and Gurupi, on May 7th, to reinforce the reach and importance of the initiative throughout the state.

Yellow May 2024

The Yellow May 2024 campaign, which celebrates the movement’s 11th anniversary, brings the theme of the need for reflection and action on the part of society as a whole, encouraging kindness in traffic as a fundamental step towards building a safer road environment. Among the planned activities, educational blitzes, walks, distribution of teaching materials, themed plays, lectures at schools and companies stand out, as well as other actions aimed at raising awareness and education in traffic.

Data provided by the Detran/TO Statistics Management reveal the urgency of the campaign, with 5,399 traffic accidents and 581 deaths registered in 2023, in a scenario that currently has a fleet of 880,708 vehicles in Tocantins.

The Traffic Department’s Inspection and Security manager, Enildo de Jesus Leite, explained that the agency has 92 agents, in addition to other employees from other departments, to work throughout the state during the campaign. Seven regions will receive lectures and other services related to the movement. “Yellow May is a nationwide campaign that brings attention to victims of traffic accidents. All bodies come together in the search for this reduction in accidents that we hope for so much, bringing more peace of mind. In Tocantins, the campaign will be carried out at the centers of Araguaína, Araguatins, Guaraí, Itacajá, Arraias, Gurupi and Palmas”, he highlighted.

The mobilization also has the support of several public bodies, including the State Department of Health (SES-TO), the State Department of Public Security (SSP), the State Department of Education (Seduc), the Transport Agency , Works and Infrastructure (Ageto), the Federal Highway Police, (PRF) the Tocantins Military Police (PMTO) and the Military Fire Department (CBMTO), highlighting the joint effort to promote safer and more responsible traffic throughout Tocantins .
