“Comida no Prato” program is launched in Bahia to distribute 2.2 million meals

Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues launched, this Tuesday morning (30), the “Comida no Prato” program, at an event held at Paróquia Divino Espírito Santo, in Vale dos Lagos, in Salvador. The initiative, the result of a partnership with 50 social organizations, will distribute 2.2 million meals to people in vulnerable and food insecure situations.

The head of the Bahian executive celebrated the opportunity to make a budget available to combat hunger and stated that other steps will be developed for this purpose. “The program does not end with just distributing food. The fight against hunger is permanent, generating employment and strengthening economic activities, generating income, whether in agriculture, in the solidarity economy or in entrepreneurs, and we will have other stages”, highlighted Jerônimo Rodrigues.

The event was attended by vice-governor Geraldo Júnior, the coordinator of the Bahia Without Fome Program, Tiago Pereira, the secretaries of Assistance and Social Development (Seades), Fabya Reis, of Urban Development (Sedur), Jusmari Oliveira, as well as secretary Osni Cardoso, from Rural Development (SDR) and the State Attorney General, Pedro Maia.

Tiago Pereira explained that the first installment of investments will already be released. “We will pass this week on to these 50 social organizations. They already work with food production, the State is making a financial contribution so that they can increase the number of services because, in fact, we need to reach those who are in a situation of hunger”.

Father Jaciel Bezerra from Paróquia Divino Espírito Santo, one of the benefiting organizations, expressed his joy in being able to increase the number of people assisted by the institution. “The program counts on the blessing of the church to be a success. We currently welcome 300 families in the Parish, and with the project, there will be 200 more, totaling 500 families.”

*Other actions*

On that occasion, the governor authorized other actions within the hunger-fighting agenda, such as rural and urban vegetable gardens, investments in municipalities to strengthen the food and nutritional security system. The Comida no Prato Public Call Notice was published, aiming to expand the network of integrated equipment to combat hunger in the state. In addition, resources were transferred to 70 municipalities that are part of the Food and Nutritional Security Network, through Alimenta Suas, after joining the Food Security System and the Bahia Without Hunger Program.

The signing of four Collaboration Terms for the Viva Horta Project was also authorized, with a total investment of over R$4.1 million, benefiting family farmers, quilombola communities, traditional peoples and associations linked to residential projects. Furthermore, the implementation of community gardens in 70 municipalities, with an area of ​​2.0 hectares, was authorized, involving an investment of R$6.7 million.

*Program*

The “Food on the Plate” notice is part of the Bahia Sem Fome State Program strategy and will be executed by the Regional Development and Action Company (CAR), linked to the Rural Development Secretariat (SDR). With an investment of more than R$24 million, the government will feed socially vulnerable families, including homeless people, low-income workers, the unemployed, elderly people, children and single mothers.
