New heat wave that hits Brazil in the middle of autumn will last at least another 10 days

Part of the country is experiencing typical summer heat in the middle of autumn.

“It’s just heat! Just heat, just summer. ‘Ah, winter is coming’, heat. ‘Ah, autumn’, heat. That’s all there is!”, complains student Vinicius Correa.

In fact, it’s not just heat, it’s a little more. It’s a heat wave. And what’s the difference? To be classified as a wave, the heat must fit a formula: for at least five days, temperatures reach at least 5 degrees higher than the maximum average for that time of year.

This is the fourth heat wave of the year and should end in the next few days, but it won’t. Meteorologists now predict that it should continue for the next 10 days.

In addition to lasting longer, this wave is the most comprehensive of the year: affects most of Paraná and Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, southern Minas Gerais, Goiás and Mato Grosso.

In Cuiabá, Ane Gabrielle was surprised when she left home:

“I needed to buy an umbrella for my daughter, who is very hot.”

On the thermometer, the temperature reached 38º C.

“Yes, it’s very hot. I’m melting”, laments day laborer Lucinda de Almeida.

In Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul, help came from the fountain in the square.

“You can at least refresh yourself, splash some water on your face, wet your head”, says musician Cleverson dos Santos.

Inmet maintains, for now, the orange alert, of danger, for six states.

“All of Inmet’s meteorological warnings have levels, right? It goes from yellow to orange to red, which would be the most severe, and this will probably happen in the next few days. We have it as if it were an air bubble preventing with cold fronts advancing towards the central part”, explains Marcia Seabra, meteorologist at Inmet.

And with no refreshments expected in the next few days, the locals are readapting their plans.

“I thought we were going to pack all that cold weather gear. I’ve already organized everything, but I’m still wearing summer clothes, right? We will still have a lot of time in summer clothes: bikinis, sun. It’s good that we stay well tanned for the whole winter there”, jokes public servant Cristiane Lima.
