The National Association of Attorneys of the States and the Federal District (Anape), the Attorney General of the State of Amazonas (PGE-AM) and the Association of Attorneys of the State of Amazonas (Apeam) prepared and approved the Amazonas Charter, as a result of the debates held during the 3rd National Meeting of Environmental Prosecutors (ENPMA), held in Manaus, last March.

The objective of the meeting, carried out by Anape and Apeam, was to discuss the importance of public advocacy in implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda, seeking to ensure increased sustainability and efficiency in the defense and guidance of States and the District Federal.

On the occasion, in addition to the thematic panels, an unprecedented workshop was held with the aim of debating common themes regarding the actions of the State and Federal District Environmental Attorneys’ Offices, which had the support of the Environmental Working Group and Sustainability (Conpeg).

The coordination of the meeting was carried out by the event’s Scientific Committee, composed, among others, of the representative of Anape, Attorney for the State of São Paulo Patricia Ulson Pizarro Werner; and by PGE-AM attorneys, Luis Eduardo Mendes Dantas, José Gebran Batoki Chad and Aldenor de Souza Rabello, former president of Apeam.

The group took the opportunity to learn more about and share a profile picture of Environmental Prosecutors, with the aim of sharing experiences and structuring common relevant themes.

The debate was attended by representatives from the States of Amazonas, Acre, Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul , Rondônia, São Paulo, the Federal District and the Union.

The Amazonas Charter highlights, among other points, the need for specialization and structuring of the Environmental Attorneys’ Offices, considering the need for proactive and specific action by the Public Attorneys of the States and the Federal District in protecting the environment.

The complete document can be accessed on the Anape (www.anape.org.br) and PGE-AM (www.pge.am.gov.br) websites.
