Rio Grande do Sul had 2,816,291 workers employed in March 2024, according to data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (CAGED) released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, this Tuesday (30/4). It is the largest number of active formal ties in the historical series that began in January 2020.

With a balance of 10,490 jobs in March, 146,638 admissions and 136,148 dismissals were recorded. Industry and services were the economic sectors that presented the highest balances in the period, with 6,455 and 6,440 jobs, respectively. Commerce and construction registered 4,375 and 933 jobs, respectively. Only agriculture recorded a negative balance in the period, with 7,713 fewer jobs.

The municipalities that had the highest job balances were:

  • Porto Alegre (2,876)
  • Venâncio Aires (1,583)
  • Santa Cruz do Sul (1,142)
  • Passo Fundo (851)
  • Canoes (518)
  • Pellets (502)
  • Cachoeirinha (427)
  • Gravataí (423)
  • New Hamburg (409)
  • Triumph (393)

In the year to date (January to March 2024), RS recorded 438,031 admissions and 381,825 dismissals, totaling a balance of 56,206 jobs. which represents the 5th highest balance in the country and an increase of 28.6% compared to the same period in 2023. The industry accounted for 26,252 jobs; services, 17,504; agriculture, 7,704; construction, 3,471; and commerce, 1,275 positions, from January to March 2024.

The municipalities that recorded the highest balances in the period were:

  • Santa Cruz do Sul (6,575 jobs)
  • Porto Alegre (5,599)
  • Caxias do Sul (4,686)
  • Venâncio Aires (4,460)
  • Vacaria (3,551)
  • Passo Fundo (1,895)
  • Canoes (1,404)
  • Bom Jesus (1,155)
  • New Hamburg (1,078)
  • Gravataí (984)

Workers’ profile

Regarding the profile of workers who made up the balance of movements in the formal labor market from January to March 2024, 34,145 were men and 22,061 were women. Regarding age group, 21.8% were up to 17 years old; 37.3%, between 18 and 24 years old; 9%, between 25 and 29 years old; 13.3%, between 30 and 39 years old; 12.6%, between 40 and 49 years old; and 6.3%, between 50 and 64 years old.

The data also shows that 0.6% were illiterate; 23.2% had incomplete primary education; 10.6% completed primary education; 17.2%, incomplete high school; 40%, completed high school; 2.9%, incomplete higher education and 5.1%, complete higher education.
