One of the priorities of the Government of Alagoas is to guarantee food and nutritional security for families in Alagoas. And one of the strategies adopted is the Distribution of Fingerlings, one of the basic programs of Alagoas Sem Fome. Until April 2024, the State Department of Agriculture and Livestock (Seagri) donated 208 thousand Nile tilapia fingerlings, benefiting 200 families in 11 municipalities.

The program aims to ensure healthy food and promote fish production in the state, and can also act as an income supplement. Each beneficiary family receives the fry according to the capacity of their water source. On average, each producer receives around 1,000 fry in distribution.

This Sunday (28), during the Government Working held on Alagoas Without Hunger Day, in Olho D’Água Grande, producer José Bezerra was one of those who benefited from the delivery in the municipality. In total, 20,000 tilapia fingerlings were distributed to family farmers in the region.

“I needed to buy, but now with this free delivery it helps a lot to complement my production. In 8 months I will already have fish to sell. My gain will be almost 100% in value because I produce in the reservoir, the fish grows, I sell it and then I just receive the money”, explained the producer.

The Secretary of State for Agriculture, Aline Rodrigues, explains that food production in family farming is one of the strategies that has the most weight in combating hunger, achieving economic development with true social transformation in Alagoas. At Seagri, in addition to the distribution of fry, the Planta Alagoas and Leite do Coração programs are also carried out.

“We are promoting the productive inclusion of rural families, who often live in situations of social vulnerability. Strengthening agricultural production plays an important role as it is the economic base of many municipalities. It makes it possible for the production of healthy food to reach the tables of those who need it most, whether in rural areas or cities”, highlighted the secretary.

Food on the table and income distribution

After delivery, the fish take between 6 and 8 months to reach around 500 grams, ideal for consumption or commercialization, if they were produced in a semi-intensive farming system, the type of system used by most of the program’s beneficiaries. The mortality rate throughout breeding is about 5%.

According to monitoring data, each producer produces around 475 kg of fish per year, which will also be used for family consumption, ensuring quality food, rich in proteins, vitamins, among other nutrients.

If the beneficiary wants to sell the fish produced, the average value on the local market is R$15.00/kg, generating gross revenue per harvest of R$7,125.00. Estimating expenditure on feed and other costs for the semi-intensive type of farming at around 35%, it is estimated that the producer has a net profit of an average of R$4,631.25/per harvest.
