The wave of arrests of mayors in Santa Catarina has reached practically all regions of the State since 2022, when Operation Mensageiro was launched by groups combating organized crime from the Public Ministry of Santa Catarina (MPSC). But none had as many cities affected, proportionally, as the Itapocu Valley region.

Of the seven cities that make up the Association of Municipalities of Vale do Itapocu (Amvali), six have had mayors arrested in the last two years. The only exception is Jaraguá do Sul. The last of them was the mayor of São João do Itaperiú, Clezio Fortunato (MDB), who was detained this Monday (29), in the fifth phase of Operation Mensageiro.

The mayor of Barra Velha, Douglas Elias Costa (PL), target of Operation Travessia, and the mayors of Corupá have also been arrested., Luiz Carlos Tamanini (MDB), the mayor of Guraramirim, Luiz Antonio Chiodini (PP), the mayor of Massaranduba, Armindo Sesar Tassi (MDB), and the mayor of Schroeder, Felipe Voigt (MDB) – the last four at different stages of the Operation Messenger.
