First organ harvesting carried out at Sinop Regional Hospital will help save 3 lives

The State Transplant Center of the State Department of Health (SES-MT) carried out, this Saturday (27.04), the first organ procurement process carried out in the municipality of Sinop. Thanks to the solidarity of the donors’ families, three patients from two other states will have a new chance at life.

The capture was completed late Saturday afternoon, at the Sinop Regional Hospital. The surgery to remove the organs began at 12:21 pm and enabled the donation of a liver and two kidneys, which will benefit patients in the Federal District and São Paulo.

The action was coordinated by teams from Mato Grosso and included health professionals from Brasília (DF). The logistics for carrying out the procedure had the support of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and the Integrated Air Operations Center (Ciopaer), linked to the State Secretariat for Public Security (Sesp-MT).

“Organ harvesting and transplantation are procedures that highlight the grandeur of the Unified Health System (SUS). One person can save the lives of people who are in other states waiting for the donation gesture. I want to praise the brilliant work of the SES teams, through the State Transplant Center and the Sinop Regional Hospital, who made this great feat happen”, said the Secretary of State for Health, Gilberto Figueiredo.

The director of the Sinop Regional Hospital, Jean Alencar, celebrated the first capture carried out in the unit.

“For the first time, in more than 10 years at the Regional Hospital, we are offering organs from one of our patients to the National Transplant Center. With the family’s consent and support from the State Transplant Center, we began the process. We must value the gesture that this family made in a moment of great pain and we must also recognize the commitment and involvement of our care team, who embraced this cause in a very beautiful way”, said the manager.

SES Deputy Secretary for Regulation, Fabiana Bardi, highlights the work of the professionals involved in the action. She understands that this is hard work that requires love, patience and time from the teams.

“We understand the importance of awareness and dialogue in the organ donation process, which is why we are investing in the creation of Intra-Hospital Committees for Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplants within public and private hospitals in the State. These committees are responsible for the family interview and providing guidance on the process. We are very grateful for the receptivity of families who, in a difficult time, choose to donate organs and save lives”, said Fabiana.

SES has invested in restructuring the State Transplant Center with the expansion of the team, implementation of the intra-hospital commission for donation of organs and tissues for transplantation and training of medical professionals in public and private hospitals. These actions aim to increase the number of organ procurement in the state.

The coordinator of the State Transplant Center, Anita Ricarda da Silva, thanked the donor families and also the professionals involved.

“We thank and congratulate the efforts of everyone involved. To the donor families, our deepest feelings of gratitude and respect. Through this noble gesture, other people will have a new living condition and with them several families will no longer suffer from these donations”, he concluded.

Balance

In 2023, Mato Grosso carried out a total of seven organ harvestings. The donations benefited 17 patients from Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Pernambuco, Acre, Paraná and the Federal District.

During this period, the State Transplant Center measured the capture of 253 corneas for donation, of this total, 184 corneas were harvested with support from the Department of Death Verification Service (SVO). Transplants in Mato Grosso

In Mato Grosso, cornea and tissue transplants are performed. Patients who need transplants of other organs are referred by the Out-of-Home Treatment service to be transplanted in other states; Travel expenses and accommodation and food allowance for the patient and companion are paid by SES-MT.

The kidney transplant service in Mato Grosso is undergoing a restructuring of the reference units. At the moment, the Government is in negotiations to fully resume services.
