The Port of São Francisco do Sul, in the north of Santa Catarina, has achieved historic numbers since its foundation on July 1, 1955. The accounting balance presented by the port terminal’s management showed a net profit close to R$30 million (R$ 29,764,085.41) in 2023.

The value represents an increase of 400% compared to 2022, when the profit was almost R$6 million (R$5,953,117.23). So, last year, earnings grew five times. Net profit is the value obtained from total revenue, minus expenses and taxes.

The port also recorded a historic record in cargo handling in 2023, with 16.8 million tons handled.

The main contribution to achieving this achievement was tariff revenue, the result of resources arising from port fees charged to ships that docked in São Francisco.

The fee corresponds to the waterway and land infrastructure offered by the port, in addition to cargo storage and weighing services.

Reinvested profit

For the port’s president, Cleverton Vieira, the exceptional financial result stems from planning for the good use of the tariff funds collected.

“We seek to organize and rationalize expenses, always seeking to save resources for use in works and services that result in operational gains and the improvement of our infrastructure,” he said.

Vieira also highlighted that all profits generated by the public company must be reinvested in the port itself or in its road, rail and waterway access.

“It’s a virtuous circle: the more efficient the state-owned company, the more investments with tariff resources are generated, always in the search for improvements that best serve the Port’s users”, he highlighted.

Return on capital

Thanks to investments in port infrastructure, the return on capital reached 14% in 2023, exceeding the 4% in 2022 by more than four times.

The percentage achieved exceeds the target of 5% established for the port terminal in the North of Santa Catarina in the Igap (Port Authorities Management Index), within the scope of administrative efficiency, determined by the Union.
