The state Department of the Environment opened an Amazon nut processing factory in the indigenous territory of the Zoró People, in Rondolândia (1,064 km from Cuiabá). The construction of the project directly benefits 100 indigenous families and was made possible through the REM MT Program, a joint initiative between the governments of Germany and the United Kingdom, under the coordination of Sema, which develops various projects in Mato Grosso for the conservation of standing forests.

The 32 villages of the Zoró People were represented by their chiefs at the factory inauguration ceremony, held in the Guwa Puxurej village, on Thursday (25).

On the occasion, the Secretary of Environment of Mato Grosso, Mauren Lazzaretti, reinforced the State Government’s commitment to indigenous peoples. “REM MT is a State program that has among its pillars one that is extremely important for the Zoró People and for all 42 ethnic groups in Mato Grosso, which is to respect the will of the indigenous people so that they receive support from the State to strengthen of its production chain, its cultural process, the maintenance of the dignity of its people”, declared Mauren.

In addition to the 100 families benefiting from the project, the entire Zoró People benefited from the construction of the factory. The Zorós joined the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) of the National Supply Company (Conab) and will receive a resource of R$ 1.5 million to deliver 19 tons of Amazon nut almonds to socio-assistance organizations in Rondolândia and Ji-Paraná, in the state of Rondônia.

Conab established a price of R$78 per kilogram of processed nuts, a value well above the private market, which will strengthen the work of the Zoró indigenous people, promoting the extraction and processing of almonds and valuing the nut chain. Among the objectives of the PAA is to boost family farming.
