The Federal Police arrested a businessman and two public servants of the city hall of Bonfim, a municipality in the North of Roraima, with around R$462 thousand , this Friday (26). They are suspected of being part of a fraud scheme in bidding procedures at city hall.

The suspects were arrested red-handed during an action carried out in Boa Vista. The investigations are investigating whether the seized money is also linked to the supplementary elections in Alto Alegre, which will take place next Sunday (28).

When contacted by g1, the city of Bonfim informed that it is unaware of the facts, but that it will investigate the information.

During the investigations, the PF caught the moment when the owner of a company that won a bid handed a backpack containing R$415,000 to the president of the Bonfim city council’s bidding committee.

An additional R$47,000, three vehicles and documents from companies related to the alleged scheme were also seized during the investigations.

The businessman was arrested for the crime of active corruption and the public servants for the crime of passive corruption. The three were charged with criminal association and money laundering, and remain in custody.

Last Thursday (25), the Federal Police seized R$50,000 from the car in which Senator Mecias de Jesus (Republicans) was traveling in Alto Alegre. The PF’s seizure occurred following a complaint about vote buying in a commercial establishment in the municipality. The police went to the scene and “found an unusual movement of people.”

A man was arrested on suspicion of buying votes, but was released after paying bail, which did not have the amount reported by the Federal Police. The amount seized was divided into R$100 notes divided between the suspect’s waist and socks.

On the day, to g1, the senator’s advisor informed that it is not correct to say that the amount retained by the Federal Police was intended for buying votes.

“There is no final investigation conclusion that points to such a fate. Nor is it illegal for a person to have money in cash. All clarifications have already been provided to the authorities”, he added.
