The External Financing Commission (Confiex) approved this Thursday (25) eight projects focusing on regional integration, improving the quality of life and reducing social inequality among the population living in the region bordering Brazil with the countries of the Mercosur.

The projects, which total more than R$350 (US$70 million) million in resources, involve sanitation, productive development to generate employment and income, urban mobility and social infrastructure for indigenous villages, among other public policies.

According to the Ministry of Planning and Budget, the selection of projects was made by the External Financing Commission (Cofiex) and took into account criteria such as the Human Development Index (HDI) of the affected region, the potential for reducing regional inequalities in the public policy presented and the role in physical and social integration with other Mercosur countries. In total, 26 project proposals were submitted, totaling more than R$1 billion.

Acre, one of the beneficiaries

Acre should receive resources from Focem for a project to expand the swine and poultry farming chains on the Border Strip with Bolivia. A project led by the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, in turn, will serve 363 villages located in the border region between Brazil and its Mercosur partners.

The Program for Development of Production Chains for Employment Generation in the State of Acre was presented by the state government and will directly benefit 1,500 rural producer families, with an estimated involvement of 2,625 women and 1,500 young people aged 15 to 29. Acre is 16th in the country in the IDHM ranking, with a human development index of 0.710, in 2021, considered high. However, the majority (21 of the 22 municipalities) have a low or very low HDI, and 51% of the population lives in poverty.

The basis of the project is to promote sustainable socioeconomic development, increase employment, work and income, and reduce rural poverty through the expansion and strengthening of pig and poultry production chains. Training rural producers, with the dissemination of technological innovations, will allow these families to increase and qualify the supply of poultry and pork to industries that currently have idle capacity.

The project also connects with the South American integration routes (Quadrante Rondon and Bioceânica de Capricornio routes, mainly) because this increase in meatpacking production can be transported to national, regional and even international markets with greater agility and lower cost.
