4 in 10 Bahian households are food insecure
Food insecurity affected four out of every 10 households in Bahia in 2023. The proportion refers to families at three levels:
- those who experience a scenario of concern or uncertainty about having the necessary amount of food (mild insecurity)
- those who experience a quantitative reduction in food and even lack of food (moderate insecurity)
- those facing hunger (severe insecurity)
In the same way, The proportion of people living in homes under these conditions has fallen. The number went from 7.387 million citizens in 2018 to 6.360 million in 2023, a drop of 13.9%.
According to the institute, the reduction has continued in Brazil over the last five years. During the period, the index went from 36.7% to 27.6%. The only state going against the trend was Sergipe, where the proportion of food insecure households grew by almost 1%.
Bahia’s situation on the national scene
Despite the drop, Bahia lost its position in the national ranking on the topic. The reduction in the state was only the 21st most intense among the 27 units of the Federation.
As a result, the territory went from 14th with the most households in this situation to the 6th worst in the country, behind only Sergipe, Pará, Maranhão, Amazonas and Piauí.
