A 26-year-old woman died at the Centro-Sul Emergency Care Unit (UPA), in Belo Horizonte, last Tuesday night (23). The family reveals that Marianne Silva Torres was admitted to the health unit with chest pain and unable to walk, but was classified with a green bracelet (no urgency) by the triage. After waiting five hours at the scene, the young woman had a cardiorespiratory arrest and could not resist.

According to information in the police report, the family alleges that there was medical negligence. Marianne’s boyfriend said that the young woman was taken to the UPA by the concierge of the building where she lived. He only managed to get to the UPA hours later.

“[Ele nos relatou que] Marianne was lying on the floor of the UPA, reporting that she felt pain in her legs, that she was in agony with pain, asking for help”, says an excerpt from the document.

After a long time, João says that a UPA doctor saw Marianne and said that the young woman was having an anxiety attack. She was treated, but continued to complain of pain. The victim’s boyfriend said he tried to look for help again, but the nurses didn’t know where the new doctor was. After that, Marianne had a sudden illness and died.

Doctors tried to revive the victim for more than an hour

The doctor responsible for the duty was interviewed by the military and reported that, according to the medical records, Marianne was admitted to the UPA at 1 pm, reporting chest and leg pain. He says that after Marianne was treated, she was taken to an observation room, where she passed out. An emergency doctor was called and the patient was immediately taken to the emergency room.

The doctor also reported that the team performed resuscitation maneuvers for around an hour and six minutes. Marianne did not respond to stimuli and death was confirmed at 6pm on Tuesday (23).

All witnesses who were at the scene told the police that the young woman did not receive proper medical attention at the scene, as she was in agony in pain. The witnesses said they were available for further clarification and said they filmed the situation.

What the authorities say

In a statement, the Civil Police reported that Marianne’s body was sent to the Dr. André Roquette Medical-Legal Institute (IMLAR) to undergo examinations and be released to family members. “PCMG awaits the conclusion of other expert reports and investigates the causes and circumstances of the death of the 26-year-old woman,” said the corporation.

Belo Horizonte City Hall regretted the case and said that “the patient received all necessary assistance while she was in the unit”.

“The user arrived at the location at 1:30 pm complaining of pain in her chest and legs. She underwent risk classification at 1:32 pm and, at around 2:50 pm, was medicated. After being treated, and while waiting for the team to re-evaluate, the young woman had a cardiorespiratory arrest and was immediately taken to the emergency room. Despite all efforts and resuscitation maneuvers, carried out by UPA professionals for more than an hour, she did not resist resuscitation attempts. At the time of service, the UPA Centro-Sul team was complete, with 11 doctors, six nurses and 20 nursing technicians”, informed PBH.

The Municipal Health Department was also available for any necessary clarifications.
