The 15th edition of the Stone Retail Economic Activity Index, which analyzed data from March, shows a 0.7% drop in sales volume in the state of Santa Catarina, in the annual comparison. The study, which presents monthly retail movement data, is an initiative by Stone, a technology and financial services company that is the Brazilian entrepreneur’s main partner, in partnership with Instituto Propague.

The survey is based on the methodology proposed by the Consumer Finance team at the Federal Reserve Board (FED), which devised a similar economic indicator model in the United States. Operations via cards, vouchers and Pix within the StoneCo group are considered. The objective is to map data from small, medium and large retailers on a monthly basis and publish a portrait of the national sector.

“This month’s results show us that, although the result compared to last year is negative, when we look at the evolution between months of the first quarter of 2024, there is a continued trend of improvement”, explains the economic researcher and science scientist. data from Stone, responsible for the survey, Matheus Calvelli.

National highlights by segment

In the analysis by segments, the report indicated that five of them registered a significant annual drop, with the books and newspapers, magazines and stationery sector leading the statistics, with a drop of 13.2%, followed by construction material (12%) , fabrics, clothing and footwear (4.5%), furniture and household appliances (4.0%) and pharmaceutical articles (0.8%). Only one segment showed an increase, that of hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with 0.7%.

Regional highlights

Only five states stand out with positive results in the month, in the year-on-year comparison: Ceará (8%), Amazonas (5.4%) and Roraima (5.1%), in the North and Northeast regions, and Mato Grosso do Sul (1.6%) and Mato Grosso (0.9%), in the Center-West region of the country. Regarding falls, six other states recorded declines in the month. The negative highlights in the North and Northeast regions were: Alagoas (14.9%), Piauí (5%) and Paraíba (4.4%). In the Central West, Southeast and South regions they were: Espírito Santo (4.6%), Rio de Janeiro (2.9%) and Minas Gerais (2.2%).
