Acre was the only state in Brazil in which poverty grew from 2022 to 2023, while in 25 states and the Federal District the rate fell, reaching its lowest level since the beginning of the historical series in 2012. The national index went from approximately 32% in 2022 to 27.5% the following year, according to the Jones dos Santos Neves Institute, in Espírito Santo. The information is based on the income survey, released last week by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, IBGE.
Contrary to the economic growth of the rest of the country, poverty increased in Acre from 51.1% in 2022 to 51.55% in 2023. A person who lives on up to R$664 per month is considered to be in poverty.
When evaluating the extreme poverty rate, that is, living on less than R$ 208.00 per month, the IBGE study demonstrated that the highest indicator was also that of Acre, where statistics show that 13.2% of the population fit the profile in 2023. Maranhão (12.2%) and Ceará (9.4%) are in second and third place among the states that had the worst numbers, respectively.
