Mato Grosso do Sul recorded four new deaths caused by the influenza virus, bringing the total to five in 2024 alone. The deaths occurred between April 16 and 20 amid an outbreak of respiratory diseases brought about by autumn.

According to the epidemiological bulletin released this Wednesday (24), the records are from Campo Grande, Porto Murtinho, Aquidauana and Aparecida do Taboado. The victims were between 49 and 77 years old, and two of them suffered comorbidities.

According to the SES (State Health Department) document, the last five years ended as follows in relation to the disease:

  • 2019 – 65 deaths
  • 2020 – 8 deaths
  • 2021 – 5 deaths
  • 2022 – 119 deaths
  • 2023 – 65 deaths

According to the ministry, this year alone 1,714 cases of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) were registered in people hospitalized in the state. Of these, 54 were confirmed for influenza.

According to the technical director of the Unimed Campo Grande hospital, doctor Marcela Ramone do Nascimento, the most common symptoms in cases of influenza are:

  • Body ache
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Nasal congestion

“When symptoms are mild, they can be treated at home with rest, drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding crowds and keeping your hands clean. It is also very important to keep your vaccination schedule up to date.”
