Brasília (UNIQUE) – The Jones dos Santos Neves Institute (IJSN), linked to the Government of Espírito Santo, released a study that points to a reduction in the rates of “poverty” and “extreme poverty” across the country, in the year 2023, which means the lowest levels recorded in the last 11 years.

The State of Amazonas is among the top three in the ranking that shows the highest reduction rates. Amapá recorded the biggest reduction, with 14.8 percentage points, going from 47.8% in 2022 to 33% in 2023. Next is Roraima (with a drop of 9.5%) and Amazonas, with a reduction of 9 .3%.

The IJSN analysis was produced based on data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey: Income from All Sources 2023. The IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released the Pnad last Friday (19).

Increase in Acre

According to the analysis, the only state with a positive change in the poverty rate, that is, with an increase, was Acre (0.4 percentage points). The local indicator went from 51.1% in 2022 to 51.5% in 2023. This means that more than half of Acre’s population was considered poor.

In the Amazon

According to the 2023 poverty rate, Amazonas has 45.8% of its population included in this level, which means that a little less than half are considered poor and that 54.2% of the population is above the poverty line .

In other words, less than half of the population of Amazonas lives on less than R$664.02 per month, which means “poverty”.

Extreme poverty

The extreme poverty index was also evaluated by IJSN and once again the indexes are positive for Amazonas. The state is fifth in the ranking of percentage drop in extreme poverty. The first is Alagoas, with a reduction of 4.3 points, followed by Amapá (3.90), Paraíba (3.7) and Piauí and Amazonas tied with a reduction of 3.6 percentage points.

Studies consider people who survive on less than R$208.42 per month to be in “extreme poverty”.
